  Pamela Dill

  Joyce invited me to stay with her. I didn't have to ask her. She gave me my own bed and set of keys to the house in the 1st couple of days. I worked in the day, starting at 6a, and went to school in the night til 10p, pregnant with my 1st child. After 30 days or so, she said, " Now this grows old fast." Her tone wasn't mean, nor harsh. It wasn't unwelcoming. It was real... It was the day I became a woman. 30 days later, I jingled my keys at her. She gave me that laid back smile, and walked away. No dance. No celebration. She never even came to see the place. But from that place to the last day we spoke, she never wavered in making me feel like I was all of that and a bag of chips every time we spoke. She never tried to control me or belittle me. To her I wasn't trying to be something I'm not, or trying to be better than anyone else. She celebrated me for who I am. In her presence I couldn't help but to feel unapologetically beautiful, intelligent, and whole. And in remembrance her, from this day on, I will no longer apologize for being beautiful, intelligent, and whole. ~Pamela
